Waikaremoana is one of the most scenic and untouched places in New Zealand. This bush-lined lake in the Urewera National Park, was created by a giant landslide 2000 years ago. The lake lies at an altitude of 580m and is 220m deep. A well-cut track follows the perimeter of the lake and Park Board huts in many of the arms provide overnight accommodation for trampers. There is a great Motor Camp at Opourau (Home) Bay to base your fishing holiday from, it is on the lakes edge and surounded by native bush.

The lake contains mainly wild fish, first liberated in 1896. Rainbow and brown trout are both present, with an average weight of around 2kg. The liberation of smelt into the lake in 1948 markedly improved the fishery, and trout up to 4kg are occasionally landed.

Stalking cruising brown trout round the edge of the lake during the summer months is very popular. Using small nymphs, bully imitations or a dry fly can be very productive. In winter months a large number of spawning trout run up the Hopuruahine River and Mokau Inlet. There is shoreline and boat fishing at these river mouths I usually anchor the boat on the edge of the drop off and cast from the boat with a fast sinking line into the deep water.
This really is a beautiful place to fish and relax. Always allow yourself an extra day, because you usually don’t want to leave.

Fishing Season:The lake is open all year. Tributaries draining into the lake are open from 1 Dec to 30 June.

Waikaremoana Motor Camp offers a range of comfortable accommodation in serene isolation. Situated right on the banks of the lake in the midst of Urewera National Park , it is a spacious site with nature right at your doorstep. There is a genral store and petrol/diesel pumps. And a very good boat ramp.
